2nd March Fun Day

The 7th of March 2015 saw us host our second March Sports and Recreation Fun Day. Its was great to see the enthusiasm of the schools from the moment we sent out the first email and as a result our numbers were almost double compared to last year March!

Our volunteers were once again the 3rd sports science students from Stellenbosch University and they did a great job! It was very nice to see Nelmari Hollaway, a 3rd year student from 2014 co-coordinating the new 3rd years and showing them the ropes. Great job Nelmari.

The event saw 51 learners from Athlone School for the Blind (Bellville-South), Astra School (Montana), Bizweni Centre (Somerset West), and Tembaletu School (Guguletu) attend. Various disabilities such as amputations, Cerebral Palsy, congenital abnormalities, Spinal Bifida, visual disabilities, amongst others.

It is such a joyful sight for Candace and myself to see some of the same faces returning again and again. Thirty-eight kids have returned twice and an additional five learners have attended three events (2012-2015). The fact that learners attend multiple events testifies to  their enjoyment of the activities and will hopefully have a lasting impact on their lives. We often receive emails from teachers and parents before events expressing the children’s infectious excitement for the day and our Facebook page is a buzz of activity after the event when photos are posted.

Here are just some of the comments that were left after our last event:

‘So much joy on his face.’ Dylan Solomon from Tembaletu School (Facebook.)

‘@BridgingA You guys rock! Our kids had the best day! Thank you for all the effort you put into making our kids feel so able #Hope #Ability’ written by Bizweni Centre on our twitter page.

We would like to thank Suzanne Ferreira from Stellenbosch University’s Sport Dept. for their partnership in these days. We also like to thank Wesley Morilly from Parmalat for sponsoring 72 Sterri Stumpies that formed part of the lunch packs for the learners and volunteers.

We also would like to mention Cape Union Mart and NWE Consulting Engineers without whose support these events wouldn’t be possible.
